Trois Noëls

The melody of Ding, dong, merrily on high is based on the Branle de l'Official by Thoinot Arbeau (1558) with a text by George Ratcliffe Woodward (1845-1934). O Tannenbaum uses a traditional carol from Alsace; the last stanza of the present arrangement proposes a violin counterpoint ad libitum. The last piece, Noël, develops a traditional yodel also from Alsace (Colmar), Uff em Berjel bin ich g'sässe, with an adapted text by Naji Hakim. These carols were initially designed to introduce the composer's violin and piano Sonata which develops the same tunes (Alphonse Leduc, Paris). When the two works are on a same programme, it is preferable to start by the Trois Noëls, as ordered in the score. Suggested readings to introduce each piece: 1. Luc 2, 1-20 ; 2. Mat 18, 2-4 and Marc 9, 33 to 37 ; 3. 1 Cor 13, 1-13.

La mélodie de Ding, dong, merrily on high est bâtie sur le Branle de l'Official de Thoinot Arbeau (1558) avec un texte de George Ratcliffe Woodward (1845-1934). O Tannenbaum utilise un noël traditionnel d'Alsace; la dernière strophe du présent arrangement propose un contrepoint au violon ad libitum. La dernière pièce, Noël, utilise un iodl traditionnel également d'Alsace (Colmar), Uff em Berjel bin ich g'sässe, avec un texte adapté par Naji Hakim. Ces noëls furent conçus au départ pour introduire la Sonate pour violon et piano du compositeur qui développe les mêmes airs (Alphonse Leduc, Paris). Quand les deux oeuvres sont au même programme, il est préférable de jouer d'abord les Trois Noëls, dans l'ordre de la partition. Lectures suggérées pour introduire chaque pièce: 1. Luc 2, 1-20 ; 2. Mat 18, 2-4 and Marc 9, 33 to 37 ; 3. 1 Cor 13, 1-13.
