Composed in 1917 by Zequinha de Abreu, Tico-Tico no Fubá is one of the most celebrated Brazilian choros. This four-hand piano arrangement grew out of a family suggestion which, almost playfully, became a genuine act of musical re-creation. First improvised and performed with my wife, Marie-Bernadette Dufourcet, on Instagram, it received an unexpected response with 300,000 views in just two days.

The lively, spirited character of the piece is preserved, but its form has been deliberately tightened: the two episodes of the rondo follow one another directly, while the refrain appears only at the beginning and the end. The listener is thus swept into a whirlwind of rhythm and joy, with unbroken momentum.

Composé en 1917 par Zequinha de Abreu, Tico-Tico no Fubá est l’un des choros brésiliens les plus célèbres. Cet arrangement pour piano à quatre mains est né d’une suggestion familiale qui, presque par jeu, s’est transformée en un véritable travail de recréation musicale. Improvisé et interprété pour la première fois avec mon épouse, Marie-Bernadette Dufourcet, sur Instagram, il a suscité un écho inattendu avec 300 000 vues en deux jours.

Le caractère vif et entraînant de la pièce est conservé, mais la forme a été volontairement resserrée : les deux épisodes du rondeau s’enchaînent directement, tandis que le refrain n’apparaît qu’au début et à la fin. L’auditeur est ainsi emporté dans un tourbillon joyeux et rythmé, sans jamais perdre l’élan.
