VARIATIONS ON "ES IST EIN ROS ENTSPRUNGEN", 10', Bayonne, 2022, U.M.P., In loving memory of Thomas M. Abbott, Leo Abbott, Music Director and Organist Emeritus, Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Boston, Massachusetts, 18.09.22.

Although the origin of “Es ist ein Ros’ entsprungen” is unknown, the tune appears in the “Speyer Hymnal” in 1599. The  familiar harmonization by Michael Praetorius is commonly sung to the text, “Lo, how a rose e’er blooming.”

Hakim’s first variation introduces the melody in staccato eighth notes on a backdrop of ethereal chords. A sinuous melody then entwines the tune amid pulsating harmonies. Following a rhapsodic introduction, the second variation presents a gently rocking accompaniment to the chorale as well as chromatic development. The final variation is a sparkling toccata in the minor key. After a reprise, the tune returns to the major key, and a nimble coda leads to a mystic conclusion. Leo Abbott
