VARIATIONS ON A THEME BY SAYYED DARWISH : Šams š šammūsi for piano, 17', Bayonne, 2021, U.M.P., Tatiana Primak-Khoury and Houtaf Khoury, -, -, -.

These Variations are built on Šams š šammūsi (The Beautiful Rising Sun), a popular song by Sheikh Sayyed Darwish (1892-1923), father of the Egyptian music (šammūsi is an affectionate diminutive of šams 'sun'). The harmonization of the theme, Moderato, is followed by a set of 6 variations evolving in the cycle of fifths. Successively: 1. Con moto, light in character with an ornamental melodic development, 2. Mesto, somber in minor mode, 3. Grazioso, waltz with expressive harmonies, 4. Allegro, fugue developing the theme of Darwish in a counterpuntal texture referring to Johann-Sebastian Bach, 5. Espressivo, melancholy with dense harmonies and a very collected character, 6. Allegro vivace, chaining a joyous toccata, a reminder of the waltz of the third variation in the tonal spirit of the sonata-form and a solemn apotheotic march.
