The figure of the Virgin Mary has accompanied the composer’s musical life since childhood. Among the Gregorian melodies associated with Marian devotion, Ave maris stella has held a particular place in his imagination, becoming a recurrent source of improvisation and composition. He had already explored the hymn in Ave maris stella for choir and organ and Trois Paraphrases sur Ave maris stella (both 2003), in the Esquisses grégoriennes (2006), and more recently in Fiorella – Variations on Ave maris stella (2024).

Suggested by Leo Abbott, this new work returns to the Ave maris stella in a new light. It begins in the spirit of an improvisation and unfolds in two complementary parts. The Recitativo paraphrases the Gregorian melody in an atmosphere of contemplation; the Capriccio releases its latent rhythmic energy, progressively gathering momentum and brilliance towards the final tutti.

La figure de la Vierge Marie accompagne la vie musicale du compositeur depuis son enfance. Parmi les mélodies grégoriennes liées à la dévotion mariale, l’Ave maris stella occupe une place particulière dans son imaginaire, devenant une source récurrente d’improvisation et de composition. Il avait déjà exploré cette hymne dans Ave maris stella pour chœur et orgue et les Trois Paraphrases sur Ave maris stella (2003), dans les Esquisses grégoriennes (2006), puis, plus récemment, dans Fiorella – Variations on Ave maris stella (2024).

Suggérée par Leo Abbott, cette nouvelle œuvre revient à l'Ave maris stella sous un nouvel éclairage. Elle naît dans l’esprit de l’improvisation et se déploie en deux volets complémentaires. Le Recitativo paraphrase librement la mélodie grégorienne dans une atmosphère contemplative ; le Capriccio en libère progressivement l’énergie rythmique, gagnant en mouvement et en éclat jusqu’au tutti final.
