MARIAM  for piano, 2'54, Bayonne, 2026, U.M.P., –, –, –, –.

MARIAM draws upon the beloved Maronite chant Ya Mariamu l-Bikru Fuqti, a melody previously explored by Naji Hakim in his Variations for string quartet — also arranged for string quintet or string orchestra — published by  United Music Publishing.

In the present piano work, the atmosphere is inward, prayerful, and deeply moving. The ornamented character of the original melody permeates the melismatic counterpoint within a tense harmonic language.

The musical discourse pays homage to the Mater Dolorosa, accompanying the incarnate Christ in His Passion and, through Him, the suffering of all humanity in this “vale of tears.” Yet the unexpected coda opens onto a luminous horizon, evoking Mary as the Porta Caeli — Gate of Heaven.
