Le Prélude procède par juxtaposition de 7 variations harmoniques alternant le cantus de C H A R B E L (constitué de la correspondance française entre lettres et notes – voir ci-dessous), entre main gauche et main droite, avec gradation des nuances du pianissimo au fortissimo. Le sujet de la Fugue dérive d’une ornementation du cantus du Prélude et donne lieu à un développement contrapuntique et tonal modulant dans l’ensemble du cycle des quintes. 

The Prélude proceeds by juxtaposition of 7 harmonic variations alternating the cantus of C H A R B E L (consisting of the French correspondence between letters and notes - see below), between left hand and right hand, with gradation of nuances from pianissimo to fortissimo. The subject of the Fugue derives from an ornamentation of the cantus of the Prélude and gives rise to a contrapuntal and tonal development modulating throughout the cycle of fifths.
