Naji Hakim’s JESU REDEMPTOR OMNIUM for choir, brass quintet, timpani, and percussion was commissioned by the Waynflete Singers in 2005 for an Advent concert in December of same year. The premiere was given by The Waynflete Singers and Fine Arts Brass conducted by Andrew Lumsden, with Emily Dickens (soprano solo) at Winchester Cathedral. The work is based on the VIth century gregorian hymn of the first Vespers of the Feast of the Nativity of our Lord, Christmas Day. In the poem, the whole universe celebrates the glory of Christ, born of the Virgin Mary. Each of the last four verses evokes the Christmas day, day of salvation and celebration. Its seven contrasted movements, in variation form, follow the structure of the respective stanzas of the poem.
