FANTASIA for violin solo over Edvard Munchs "Unge mennesker på stranden", 4', Chatou, 2010, Schott, til Henning Kraggerud, Henning Kraggerud, Haugar Vestfold Kunstmuseum, Tønsberg, 05.06.10

Edvard Munch’s painting ”Unge mennesker på stranden” renders a peaceful melancholic week-end evening with pensive lonesome young people on the beach. A redhead with a white dress and a joyful red hat sits with a pram, in the center of the picture : to the left, calm sea with cold bluish colors and to the right, green and lively colours. 

The atmosphere of this picture, inspired me a nostalgic fantasy for the violin. The melodic development with its contrasted characters betrays allusions to the following Danish and Norvegian folkmelodies Det var en lørdag aften and Per spelmann. The closing bars quote Maurice Ravel’s ostinato motive from Prélude à la Nuit.
