Les Variations sur "Auprès de ma blonde" sont bâties sur la marche militaire et chanson populaire du même nom -  mélodie traditionnelle du XVI^e siècle et texte attribué à André Joubert du Collet (1704). Le thème, introduit par un rythme caractéristique de marche, se développe en sept variations divertissantes qui jouent tour à tour sur l’ornementation, le rythme ou l’expressivité, avant une conclusion brillante. 

The Variations on "Auprès de ma blonde" are built on the march and folk song of the same name - traditional melody of the sixteenth century, text attributed to André Joubert Collet (1704). The theme, introduced by a characteristic rhythm of march, develops seven entertaining variations playing alternately on ornamentation, rhythm and expression, before a brilliant conclusion.
